What is Toastmasters
With a history that dates back to 1924, Toastmasters international is a non-profit organization designed to enhance the communication and leadership skills of its members around the globe. The whole concept behind Toastmasters is simply practice makes perfect combined with constructive evaluation. There are currently more than 8,000 clubs worldwide with over 170,000 members, who include professionals, business people and even college students. In Hong Kong, there are currently 36 clubs, with around 1,300 members. How Toastmasters works At a typical meeting, there is ample opportunity for all members to deliver Impromptu speeches--which train your ability to think on your feet, or Prepared speeches--which allow you to practice speech structure, vocal variety, language (including body language) and persuasion.Members can also give evaluations through which you can master feedback skills. What you will gain Enhanced communication and leadership skills. Ability to handle nervousness when facing an audience. Critical thinking, creativity and listening skills. Self-confidence and self-esteem. Growth as a person. Bonding with fellow members. How you can participate As a guest, you are most welcome to come and observe how the typical meeting is conducted. In addition, you will have the opportunity to mingle with our members. However, you cannot sign up to give prepared speeches without first becoming a member. As a member, you will become a more competent speaker by taking the initiative to give prepared speeches, being an evaluator or taking on a role so as to facilitate the meeting. As an executive committee member, you will learn to be a leader by being one yourself. Toastmasters Program Upon the accomplishment of ten prepared speeches at your own pace, you can apply for recognition as a Competent Toastmaster (CTM) and then proceed onto our advanced speaking program for the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) designation.
